Deal favors gift ban for Governor's office
WARNER ROBINS, Ga., (March 9, 2010) - Nathan Deal, a Republican candidate for governor, announced Tuesday night that, if elected, he would implement a total ban on gifts and meals from lobbyists for the governor's office.
"My office in Washington has operated for a number of years under this policy, which is over and above the rules of the House of Representatives," Deal said. "I think Georgians have made it clear they want open, honest, ethical government and I believe that starts at the top."
Deal made the announcement during a debate in Warner Robins, sponsored by Eagle Media. In the debate, Deal invited his other gubernatorial opponents to join him in endorsing the outright ban on gifts.
"There is a role for lobbyists in representing various entities at the Capitol, but that role will not include taking my staff to an expensive lunch or dinner," Deal said.
During the debate, Deal talked about his career as a criminal prosecutor, judge, state Senator and his service in Congress.
"I believe my background has uniquely qualified me to lead Georgia during these challenging times," Deal said.
