Georgia Democrats Vote to Raise Debt Ceiling

Atlanta (February 4, 2009) — The Georgia Democratic Congressional delegation voted today to increase the United States debt ceiling by $1.9 trillion, bringing the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion. The new ceiling amounts to $46,000 in debt for every U.S. resident.

Every Georgia Democratic Congressmen voted for the increase, including John Barrow, Sanford Bishop, Hank Johnson, John Lewis, Jim Marshall and David Scott. None of Georgia’s Republican Congressmen voted for the increase. The bill passed 217-212.

“At a time of decreased household income and 10 percent unemployment, Georgia’s Democratic Congressional delegation has voted to saddle every Georgia man, woman and child with $6,000 of additional debt,” Chairman Sue Everhart said. “Washington Democrats’ promise of fiscal responsibility was just empty campaign rhetoric.”

This marks the largest single debt ceiling increase in U.S. history.
