Free tree seedlings from Georgia Forestry Commission at Chattahoochee Nature Center

MACON, Ga. (February 3, 2010) - In celebration of Georgia’s Arbor Day, the Georgia Forestry Commission will be distributing free tree seedlings at the Chattahoochee Nature Center on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Free admission to the CNC will be offered from 1-3 p.m., and a full day of fun activities is planned for the whole family.

“We’re excited to be teamed up with the Chattahoochee Nature Center for this event,” said Susan Reisch, GFC’s Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator. “It’s a day to recognize the value of trees, not only for the beauty they provide, but to learn more about how they benefit clean air, clean water, and our mental and physical health.”

Reisch said that February is an ideal time to plant trees because winter dormancy allows seedlings the best resilience for transporting and growth in a new location. In anticipation of Georgia’s Arbor Day on the third Friday in February, a tree will be planted at the CNC and tree care tips will be shared. GFC Director Robert Farris is scheduled to make remarks and Tim Womick, often called the “modern day Johnny Appleseed,” will stage a performance featuring lots of learning and audience participation. The day kicks off with the Chattahoochee Challenge Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. and a 10k at 8 a.m. The movie, “The Man Who Planted Trees” will be screened, and the CNC’s regular variety of engaging activities will be offered as well.

“The Georgia Forestry Commission is happy to be a part of this special day at the Chattahoochee Nature Center,” said Reisch. “We look forward to sharing the good news about trees with everybody.”
