Georgia Secretary of State Handel Recognizes Constitution Week
Atlanta (September 17, 2009) – Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel today recognized the beginning of Constitution Week, a weeklong commemoration of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.
“The United States Constitution is the cornerstone of our nation’s founding, and an indelible reminder of the freedoms and liberties granted to U.S. citizens,” said Secretary Handel. “Constitution Week is an opportunity to honor the Constitution, its framers, and those who have fought to protect our great country. It is also a reminder of the awesome responsibility we all bear to protect and defend the Constitution and preserve our nation for future generations.”
Two Georgians, Abraham Baldwin and William Few, participated in the Constitutional Convention and signed the Constitution. On January 2, 1788, Georgia became the fourth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
To celebrate Constitution Week, the Secretary of State’s office is collaborating with the Daughters of the American Revolution to provide U.S. Constitution booklets and pencils to visitors to the Georgia Archives in Morrow. Limited quantities of these materials are available for pickup at the Georgia Archives.
