Bill Jones Takes Medalist Honors at Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (October 22, 2009) – Bill Jones of Covington fired a 4-under par 66 and was named medalist during stroke play qualifying for the 91st annual Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, taking place Rivermont Golf and Country Club, October 22-25. Jones leads a group of 31 other qualifiers who advance to match play starting Friday morning.

The defending champion, Dalton’s David Noll Jr., was exempt from qualifying and will be the top seed in the match play bracket.

Jones, who finished his collegiate career at Mercer University this past Spring, carded seven birdies during his round. He carded three on the front nine, including both par-threes (Nos. 4 and 6) and the par-five seventh. A bogey at 448-yard fifth left him posting 33 for the outward nine. Jones opened play on the back side with a birdie but made bogey at number 11. He then birdied three of his next four holes (Nos. 12, 14 and 15). A bogey at the par-3 17th yielded another nine-hole score of 33 and a 66 for the round.

Jones finished two strokes ahead of Woodstock’s Mark Strickland, who captured the Atlanta Amateur Match Play title in 2006. Past champions, Jeff Belk of Marietta (2002) and Rocky Costa of Alpharetta (1997 and 2000) tied for third at 69. Chris Johnson of Brunswick and Lawrenceville’s Zach Estep tied for fifth overall at even-par 70. Kennesaw’s Matt Nagy, a participant in the 2009 U.S. Open, posted a qualifying round of 71 to tie for seventh with Marietta’s Matthew Hayes. Four players – Lilburn’s Jacob Keen, Jorge Cora of Atlanta, Ryan Parnell of Atlanta and Atlanta’s Zachary Sexton – fired 72 and tied for ninth. Among the other players to qualify were former Atlanta Amateur Match Play champion Greg Bradford of Talking Rock (2007) and Bill Bergin of Atlanta, the 1981 Georgia Amateur Champion.

There were six players at 75 for the final five spots in qualifying. Since only five players were present for a playoff, those players automatically qualified.

The first round of match play gets underway at 8:15 a.m. Friday. Winners tee it up again in the afternoon, beginning at approximately 12:30 p.m., for the round of 16. The quarterfinals and semifinals are set to be played on Saturday, with the 18-hole championship match scheduled for Sunday morning.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are Georgia residents and members of a GSGA Member Club. Notable former champions include Perry Adair (1916), Charlie Yates (1931), Tommy Barnes (1936), Dan Yates (1942), Gene Dahlbender (1946-47, 1957-59, 1962), Bobby Jones’ son, Robert T. Jones III, (1948), Charles Harrison (1952-54, 1961, 1965, 1967-1969, 1973, 1977), Larry Mize (1979) and Danny Yates (1981-82).

Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 355 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.
