October events promote howling 
and screaming for charities

Trick or treat? From what information I’ve been able to gather, I’d all across the county, Halloween 2009 consists of only treats, including some really big ones. The traditional treats, of course, are just as big as ever. Aurora Theatre will be conducting their Scary Strolls not just on weekends, but every night for the entire month of October. Anyone wanting to learn what the mainstream media never reported, like the case of the flying corpses and what really happened at the old jail can log on to www.scarystroll.com to book a tour. Art Station at Stone Mountain celebrates its 24th annual “A Tour of Southern Ghosts” a lantern-lit tour in the dark conducted by professional storytellers. (www.artstation.org ) Also, to fill in the cracks, movie theaters all over the metro area will be featuring scary movies at all hours of the day and night.

But this year, two more big events enter the Halloween scene, and in both cases, provide treats for worthy causes. On Friday, October 23, animal lovers are sponsoring a costume Howl O’ Ween On the Green at the Duluth Town Green. This costumed event includes dinner, dancing, DJ, costume contests, prize give-aways, and the opportunity to contribute to the cause of our four-legged friends. All proceeds go to the Georgia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“SPCA is based here in Suwanee, but it works all over the state breaking up dog fighting rings, rehabilitating dogs and placing them with families,” SPCA spokesperson Jane Lumbatis said. “But due to the bad economy, their major sponsor had to withdraw funding. And speaking of four-legged friends, Chopper, the Gwinnett Braves mascot, and gang have come up with all kinds of tricks to turn the Gwinnett Stadium into the largest Halloween spectacular in Gwinnett County. Evita Rogers, stage manager for the Gwinnett Braves is thrilled to announce that for the last three weekends of October, from 7:00 p.m. until midnight, all corners of the stadium will be transformed into an interactive haunted attraction with live actors, special effects and of course, Trick-or-Treating. Known as the Stadium of Screams, the attraction will feature the Corridor of Horror, Tunnel of Terror and some not-so-spooky fun for kids ages eight and under. Each night two movies will be shown on the stadium’s video board – a PG selection at 7:30 p.m. and a PG-13 thriller at 9:30 p.m. And as an extra treat, the Web site www.stadiumofscreams.com offers a downloadable discount coupon for the event.

But the part of Stadium of Screams that’s really worth shouting about is that proceeds will go to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in its efforts to more than just treat, but to cure this disease.
