Saint Joseph’s Cardiologist Wins International Award

Atlanta (November 19, 2009) - Saint Joseph's Hospital proudly announces one of the world’s top honors in interventional cardiology has been awarded to Spencer B. King, III, MD, MACC, FSCAI, FESC, President of the Heart and Vascular Institute at Saint Joseph's Hospital. Each year, the Cardiovascular Research Foundation selects just one physician from around the world for the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) Career Achievement Award, which recognizes extraordinary talent and dedication in the areas of academic achievement, clinical expertise, education and invention in the field of interventional cardiovascular medicine. In 2009, TCT selected Dr. King from a pool of thousands.

“This honor has been given to a limited number of doctors around the world, and none is more deserving for contributions to interventional cardiology than Dr. King," says Kirk Wilson, President and CEO of Saint Joseph's Health System. "Dr. King has spent his career caring for patients with cardiovascular disease, pioneering new techniques, educating his peers and mentoring new Fellows in cardiology. He brought angioplasty to Atlanta in 1980 and has trained many of the best cardiologists in this city. We are honored for him to be associated with our programs.”

Dr. King has directed invasive and interventional cardiology training for more than 150 cardiology Fellows. He began his career at Emory University Hospital, where he served as director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory from its inception through 2000 and was director of interventional cardiology and the Andreas Greuntzig Cardiovascular Center at Emory University from 1985 until 2000.

Dr. King was president of the American College of Cardiology, President of the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and served as Chair of the Interventional Cardiology Boards of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. King is the author of more than 500 papers on cardiology, has edited or co-edited ten books including the recently released text book, Interventional Cardiology. He is editor in chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: “Cardiovascular Interventions.”
