Brent and Holman Take Over Lead at Georgia Senior Four-Ball
Columbus-duo climb leader board after posting 66
BLACKSHEAR, Ga. (November 12, 2009) – Despite gusting winds, Bobby Brent Jr. and Jimmy Holman, both of Columbus, posted the lowest score of the second round, a six-under 66, to take over the lead and carry a two-shot advantage into the final round of the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship, which is being contested at Okefenokee Country Club and Lakes at Laura S. Walker, November 11-13. Brent and Holman carded six birdies and twelve pars during their second-round performance and climbed from second place after the first round into the overall lead.
Milton’s Spencer Sappington and Bill Ploeger of Columbus matched their opening-round total of and currently sit in a tie for second position overall with defending champions Larry Clark of Kingston and Don Marsh of Johns Creek, who shot 71 during day two. Taylor Adams of St. Simons Island and Karl Simon of Lawrenceville are alone in fourth place overall with a total of 137. The team of Carl Wade and Danny Daniels of Kingsland hold fifth position after two rounds of 69.
Greensboro-tandem John Carter and Ronald Waeghe posted a second-round 70 to move into sixth. Frank Costanzo and Steve Schwartz of Savannah posted a two-day total of 140 to put them in a tie for seventh place overall with fellow Savannahians David Holcombe and Roger O’Neil. Four teams are tied for ninth position at three-under 141. They are Edsel Davis and Phil Pavoni, both of Macon, Valdosta’s Berney Armstrong and Moultrie’s Ernie Venet, Joe Brogdon of Macon and Duluth’s Pete Malcolm and Bruce Connors of Sharpsburg and Rob Lauer of Newnan.
At Lakes at Laura S. Walker, David Mansfield of Cohutta and Dalton’s Ron Lowery hold a one-stroke lead in the first flight entering the final round of play with rounds of 69 and 68. The second flight leaders are Darryl Harris of Woodstock and David Field of Athens with a tournament-total 137. The third flight leaders are Dave Benton of Social Circle and Doug Southern of Greensboro. Roland Sorel of Dunwoody and Steve Mann of Duluth are tied for the fourth-flight lead with Rome’s Edwin Mathis and Calhoun’s Virgil Waters.
The Championship flight is playing all three rounds at Okefenokee Country Club with Brent, Holman, Sappington, and Ploeger teeing off at 10:20 a.m. from the first tee. The first through fourth flights play each of their rounds at Lakes at Laura S. Walker. Play for those flights begins at 8:30 a.m.
The low 48 teams based on combined handicap index comprise the Championship Flight. The remainder of the field was determined by lottery and flighted by team handicap index. Only the competitors in the Championship flight are eligible for the overall title. Entries were open to male amateur golfers who are at least 55 years old, members of a GSGA member club and residents of Georgia. The maximum handicap differential between partners was six strokes.
Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 355 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.
