Applications for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service's Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program due December 4

ATHENS, GA, (November 4, 2009) - James E. Tillman, Sr., State Conservationist for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Georgia today announced that the 2009 Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) applications are due by December 4, 2009 to be considered for funding this fiscal year.

Applications can be taken at all NRCS offices and USDA Service Centers. WHIP is a voluntary program that provides financial incentives to landowners for the development and improvement of high quality habitat that supports wildlife populations of National, State, Tribal, and local significance. Participants agree to implement a wildlife habitat development plan and the NRCS agrees to provide financial assistance for the initial implementation of wildlife habitat development practices. Financial assistance is available at 75 percent of the average state cost of practice establishment as determined by the NRCS. The financial agreement typically lasts five years.

"I encourage landowners who are interested in wildlife habitat management to apply for this worthwhile conservation program," said Brent Dykes executive director of the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission.

NRCS provides leadership in a partnership effort to help people conserve, maintain and improve our natural resources and environment.

More information on NRCS conservation programs can be found at www.ga.nrcs.usda.gov under programs.
