New Physician and Interventional Radiology Technology Advances Healthcare in Duluth

Duluth, Ga. (June 30, 2009) - Gwinnett Medical Center's Interventional Radiology program recently expanded its clinical capabilities with the addition of a new physician and advanced technology that will raise the level of care it provides the community.

Gwinnett Medical Center - Duluth recently welcomed Brandon Kang, MD, a board-certified interventional radiologist, who comes to Gwinnett after having been a valued member and professor the past few years at Emory University's Interventional Service. Dr. Kang is well respected in his field and was awarded America's Top Radiologist by the Consumer's Research Council in 2007 and 2008. In addition, Dr. Kang earned the prestigious Ettman Scholar Award and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Resident of the Year while training at the University of Tennessee.

"Dr. Kang's expertise in this field has been an invaluable addition to our already stellar group of doctors," said Vangie Dennis, manager of Interventional Radiology at Gwinnett Medical Center - Duluth.

Interventional Radiology (IR) focuses on minimally invasive, image-guided therapy. Gwinnett Medical Center's IR team is located on both the Lawrenceville and Duluth campuses and is comprised of Dr. Kang, Sanjay Patel, MD, Jaymin Patel, MD, Harry F. Rinker, MD, and James A. York, MD. All of these radiologists are not only board-certified with fellowship training in angiography and interventional radiology but have also achieved the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Interventional Radiology by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

This team of skilled medical professionals have the luxury of using GMC - D's freshly renovated and expanded IR suite, which now includes the Siemen's AXIOM Artis dTA interventional system.

"The addition of this technology, along with our award-winning physicians, is another example of our commitment to the people of Gwinnett to transform healthcare," says Dennis. "In everything we do, we continually strive to provide the highest level of clinical quality available to our community."

In this new IR suite at GMC - D, physicians can perform the full gamut of interventional procedures, including Endovenous Laser Therapy/Ablation, Kyphoplasty, Radiofrequency Ablation, Transjugular Intrahepatic Porto-systemic Shunt (TIPS) and Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). The suite is open 24 hours per day and seven days per week for the most urgent procedural needs.

This technology along with expanded physician expertise has made the GMC campuses more equipped to provide comprehensive interventional care.
