Secretary Handel Invites Georgians to Celebrate the Georgia Capitol’s 120th Anniversary

Atlanta (July 1, 2009) — Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel invites all Georgians to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Georgia Capitol by attending a special celebration in the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, July 8, 2009. The ceremony will feature a tour of the Capitol and birthday cake, and attendees can sign a birthday card to Miss Freedom, the statue that crowns the Capitol dome.

“It is my honor to celebrate the anniversary of the Georgia Capitol as secretary of state,” Secretary Handel said. “I encourage all Georgians to come celebrate our state’s history by visiting the Capitol.”

Constructed between 1884 and 1889, this monumental neoclassical structure with its gilded dome is the perfect expression and symbol for the capitol of the “New South” as Atlanta considered itself to be after the Reconstruction. Along with many state capitols, its design and form follow architectural precedents established by the United States Capitol.
