Dunwoody cityhood bill receives final approval

ATLANTA (March 21, 2008) – State Sen. Dan Weber’s (R-Dunwoody) legislation allowing Dunwoody residents to vote to become a city has received final passage in the Senate. Senate Bill 82 calls for a vote by the residents of Dunwoody to decide whether they want to incorporate, providing more local control over future development in the community and the services residents receive.

“I believe that the citizens of Dunwoody deserve the right to vote on this issue,” said Sen. Weber. “They should have the final say on a decision that will not only significantly impact the future of their community, but also every individual who resides in Dunwoody. A decision on the incorporation of a city is an issue better decided upon the people it directly affects.”

SB 82 has spurred many lively debates as it made its way through the legislative process to finally receive approval from both the Senate and House this week. The bill mandates that a referendum will be held the day of the general primary in July, when qualified voters of Dunwoody can approve or reject the decision for incorporation.

Sen. Weber has long fought for Dunwoody’s right to vote on cityhood and today’s vote takes Dunwoody one step closer to becoming a Georgia city.
