Delivering Meals outweigh Gas Prices
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (July 7, 2008) - “Despite the increase in fuel costs, seniors can be rest assured that their meals will still be delivered to them on a regular basis. The staff of Gwinnett Senior Services is dedicated in making sure our homebound seniors receive their meals as needed,” said Marilyn Sessions, Meals on Wheels coordinator.
Gwinnett County Senior Services delivers meals to approximately 400 clients in their homes. There are 125 routes which are divided amongst five staff drivers and 200 volunteers. Clients receive meals year round except for public holidays.
Gwinnett Senior Services Meals on Wheels drivers, not only deliver meals, they bring so much more to the plate. Oftentimes, the drivers are the only company the seniors receive all day. Lawrence Tally, fulltime MOW driver explains, “I am not only their driver, but also their friend. I spend a few moments to get to know them and see how they are doing.”
Cheche Braswell and Marjorie Schuler are volunteers who have been delivering meals for over ten years. Schuler not only drives, but also coordinates the delivery route for Harmony Grove volunteers. Sessions expresses her gratitude, “The volunteers find a lot of joy in bringing meals to the seniors in their homes. The increase in fuel costs has not deterred them from helping out. They believe the reward of being able to help someone else, certainly outweighs the cost.”
