Try to remember these times in September

With Labor Day falling on September 1, what a great way to usher in all the fun in store for the rest of the month. And most of them are free.

You can start this afternoon with Arts on the Creek at Johns Creek United Methodist Church or this evening get in on the Last Blast of Summer with a special concert at the Stone Mountain Park laser show.

From September 4-7 you can return to Stone Mountain Park for their 40th Annual Yellow Daisy Festival. Over 500 artists and craftsmen will be displaying their work.

The evening of September 5 brings music for a variety of tastes. You can enjoy the final 2008 Suwanee Smooth Jazz concert in Town Center Park, tap your feet along with Banks and Shane at the last 2008 Norcross Concert in the Park, or get in on the ground level of history at the first annual Battle of the Bands at Duncan Creek Park in Dacula. Then on Saturday, September 6, you can listen to live jazz at the British Car Show in downtown Norcross. Not only are the cars unique, but my sources say meeting the owners of these awesome automobiles is an experience in itself.

If you’ve never been to Statham, just a short stretch beyond Winder, their 10th Annual Sunflower Festival might be a good way to get acquainted with some of our neighbors in Barrow County. The September 20 event includes a car show, a 5K run/walk and an old fashioned street dance.

On September 26, Randall Bramblett will perform at final 2008 Moonlight and Music concert at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse.

If you’ve been admiring those arty dog statues on display in downtown Duluth, you can bid on one at the Duluth Fall Festival the weekend of September 27-28, when they will be auctioned off for the benefit of the Duluth Historical Society.

On any Saturday night in September you can bring your lawn chairs and blankets to the Mall of Georgia for free family friendly movies at the Village Amphitheater.

Everything I’ve mentioned so far is free, but there are a couple of paid events I’d like to add. For $25, on September 6, you can support the Dream House for Medically Fragile Children at Music on Main in Lilburn Park. Dream House founder, Laura Moore, incidentally, received the United Way Women's Legacy in Gwinnett award for her talent in bringing this worthy cause into existence.

And finally, from September 11-21 you can experience the Gwinnett County Fair. Adult admission is $5, but if you’re as old as I am, you pay only $2, the same as the kids! Still not free, but pretty close.
