Former Suwanee Planning and Zoning Commissioner David Hancock is now a candidate for the Georgia State Legislature 

Suwanee, GA (April 29, 2008) - On Monday, April 28, Mr. Hancock filed the necessary paperwork to represent the people of the 98th congressional district - the northwest corner of Gwinnett County that encompasses the cities of Suwanee, Buford and Sugar Hill.

   "My children are older, my business is doing well, and I feel now is the time to give something back to the community," Mr. Hancock said.

   A look at his record shows that he has actually been giving to the community for quite some time.

   Mr. Hancock got his start with a run for Suwanee City Council in 1997. Although he was unsuccessful, the loss didn't deter him, and in 2000 he played a vital role as a member of the committee that developed the first comprehensive master plan for the City. In 2001 he was heavily involved with the Mayor and Councilmen in promotion efforts to ensure passage of Suwanee's landmark $17.7 million open space bond referendum. He also served 2 years on the Suwanee Day Festival committee and was sponsorship committee chair the first year the festival made a profit. His favorite work with the City however would be his three years as a Planning and Zoning Commissioner.

   "I enjoyed reading all of the staff documents, but most of all I liked being able to get out and walk the properties, talking with surrounding residents about the zoning, and hearing their concerns,"
Mr. Hancock comments. "It was very satisfying to be able to represent the City and let neighbors know that someone really cared how a zoning would affect their quality of life."

   Alongside his work with Suwanee Mr. Hancock has been very active in neighborhood homeowner associations. He has held almost all board positions including three terms as president, and has published monthly subdivision newsletters for over eight years, addressing such topics as local developments, government regulations, neighborhood concerns and historic site preservation. He gave up his seat on P&Z only when he moved just outside the City limits a few years ago, but remains actively involved with the City of Suwanee and Sugar Hill in ongoing Gwinnett County zoning efforts.

   After graduating from Auburn University in 1983 with an Engineering Degree, David moved to Atlanta where he worked for seven years with a national traffic engineering firm, working on traffic control systems in cities such as Los Angeles and Denver. He then began writing software for industrial computer systems, and in 1997 formed a Georgia based software company where he now serves as Vice President and General Manager. In this capacity he is responsible for all receivables and payables, negotiates all contracts and agreements for the company and manages payroll for employees in Atlanta, Texas and Missouri.

   He is also involved in the community through sports. A second degree black belt in Taekwondo, David is an assistant instructor at a local martial arts school. He has an excellent relationship with the Suwanee police department, is a graduate of the Suwanee Citizen's Police Academy, and a good friend of the head of the FBI in Atlanta.

   David and his wife Darlene have two children who attend North Gwinnett High School, and when they were at Lanier Middle school he volunteered his time every week with the PTSA in the school computer lab. He is an active member of Perimeter Church where he has been involved in the music ministry for almost 25 years.
