Sen. Shafer appointed to Southern States Energy Board

ATLANTA (September 6, 2007) - Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle has appointed State Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth) as one of Georgia's three members of the Southern States Energy Board.

“Senator Shafer will bring valuable experience and insight to the Southern State Energy Board,” Lt. Gov. Cagle said today, “and I look forward to what he will accomplish in collaboration with the participating states.”

The Southern States Energy Board, which is headquartered in Atlanta, was created in 1960 by an interstate compact sanctioned by the United States Congress. Sixteen states and two territories belong to the compact.

The Board encourages interstate collaboration in the areas of environmental protection, energy security and economic development. It provides technical and policy assistance to state lawmakers and administers federal research grants.

“We all recognize the importance of having a safe and reliable supply of energy,” Sen. Shafer said. “I appreciate the Lieutenant Governor's confidence in me and look forward to my service on the Southern States Energy Board.”

The Board is composed of the governors and two legislators from each member state and territory and one federal representative appointed by the President.

Sen. Shafer currently is chairman of the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee, and previously served as chairman of the Senate Science and Technology Committee.
