Pull-A-Part's Steve Levetan selected as WSB-TV "Going Green Champion"

ATLANTA (November 20, 2007) – Steve Levetan, senior vice president of Pull-A-Part, a used automotive parts retail business ( www.pullapart.com ), was selected as the WSB-TV’s Going Green Champion of the Week.
“This honor recognizes individuals and businesses that actively support green initiatives which improve the local environment,” said Miranda Atnip, WSB-TV producer and writer. “Steve's lifelong commitment to green efforts within the automotive recycling industry made him a clear choice as a Going Green Champion.”

Steve, an Atlanta native, and long time Sandy Springs resident, was literally born into the recycling industry, before it was called the “recycling” industry and has been an active member in the recycling industry since joining the family business in 1970. His grandfather started a scrap metal business, Dixie Iron and Metal Co., in Atlanta in 1919. Following World War II, Steve’s father and uncle entered the business, expanding it into a full-service scrap metal processing operation. Steve joined the business in 1970, while still a student at Georgia Tech.

When Steve and his family sold their business in 1986, he combined his government affairs and recycling interests forming Resource Services, an environmental consulting firm. Steve began lobbying professionally, representing both trade associations and individual companies in the recycling industry, on a national level, with an emphasis on the Southern states. One of his key contributions to the recycling industry was drafting language which was successfully included in solid waste and recycling legislation in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The language clarified that recyclable materials destined for recycling were not solid waste – a distinction that has allowed recycling to flourish, without the unnecessary regulation that would result if categorized as waste handling.

In 2004, Steve joined Pull-A-Part, LLC, as senior vice president. His duties include directing the company’s external affairs, including community and governmental relations, as well as environmental and regulatory compliance. Steve’s wealth of experience in the recycling industry makes him a sought after advisor for several committees and boards. He served as president of the Georgia Association of Scrap Processors/Georgia Association of Recycling Industries; chair of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Council’s Environmental Committee; and founding board member of the Georgia Recycling Coalition. He is a former chair of Keep Sandy Springs/North Fulton Beautiful, and is currently a Board Member of the Sandy Springs Conservancy.

With 37 years of active involvement in the recycling arena, Steve continues to be an advocate for recycling, solid waste reduction, and litter prevention. From traditional recycling to preservation of the environment, Steve’s career continues to define activism and leadership in Georgia and throughout the South.
