GFC Helps Residents with Tornado-damaged Timber
MACON, GA (March 15, 2007) - Recent tornadoes that raked Georgia have caused an estimated $10.3 million in tree damage, and the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) is helping residents deal with the storms’ aftermath.
“These tornadoes brought down an enormous amount of timber,” said Frank Green, GFC Interim Management Chief of the Georgia Forestry Commission. “The Americus area was especially hard hit, losing about $3 million in timber and many old growth ornamental trees. Our Professionals are busy conducting timber examinations, providing recommendations on harvesting and salvage, and helping people find assistance with tax relief.”
Green said there are several actions landowners can take to salvage and receive benefits from fallen timber. GFC Professionals can provide a list of contractors and guidance on harvesting. They can also refer landowners to information that outlines specific tax strategies for dealing with unexpected timber loss. Links to both sets of information can be found on the GFC website at

.
“We urge anyone with questions about tree damage, whether large landowners or urban residents, to contact the Georgia Forestry Commission as soon as possible.” Call your local GFC office or 1-800-GA-TREES.
