Get in on the Act

   Call me a drama queen, but I just can’t help emoting over all the events being staged in Gwinnett County next weekend. Lionheart Theatre presents Tom Sawyer on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Norcross Community and Cultural Arts Center. ( www.lionhearttheatre.org ) New London Theatre presents their final Cats acts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at South Gwinnett High School. ( www.newlondontheatre.org ) And if you’d like a role in planning other dramatic events, New London Theatre is seeking fundraiser ideas for their new building.    If concerts are more to your liking, on July 20 the Quantum Bank presents Music Mainstreet, featuring The Mustangs at the Burnette-Rogers Pavilion, Main Street, Suwanee. ( www.suwanee.com ) In Duluth, Slippery When Wet (Bon Jovi Tribute band) will perform Friday and Lori O’Brien and the Victory Jazz Orchestra will present “A Tribute to the Sinatra Era” on Saturday. ( www.duluth-ga.com ) Also, be sure to mark Friday July 27, when talented singers from all over Gwinnett will compete in the final competition of Lilburn Idol and your vote counts!    If you’d like to get a little more involved in the drama the county offers, next weekend or any weekend, you can take the Aurora Theatre’s Ghost Tour of Lawrenceville. Hear about flying corpses, the heiress who was kidnapped and buried alive and what really happened at the old jail. Catch a ghost on camera and you will be memorialized in the Hall of Fame.    I know Karaoke created some controversy in a certain Gwinnett town this year, but I believe none, nowhere, no how can be critical of Coffeeoke, especially when it’s at the Flying Saucer in downtown Lawrenceville. Bring the family, enjoy dinner and sing your favorite songs. And also enjoy the coffee that’s rated best in Gwinnett. If you wear out your vocal chords and need a rest, you can return on Friday night to hear Melvin Jordan, formerly of the Temptations and Candace Devaney. On Saturday you can relax to the classical rhythm and blues of Jerome and Andrea Tench. ( www.theflyingsaucercafe.com )

   Dinner theatre takes on a whole new twist at Spiced Right Barbeque in Lilburn. First of all, you don’t have to act. Just be yourself and enjoy the Pig Pickin’ on the third Saturday of every month. A whole pig is smoked right on the premises and you can pick off as much as you want along with some country sides, while listening to live music. “Kids love it! They keep looking at the pig and can’t believe it’s real,” said co-owner Charlotte Holloway.

   When Shakespeare said “The world is a stage” I wonder if he ever envisioned a weekend in Gwinnett County.
