Over Coffee

Good luck to the folks up in the new city of Johns Creek in their battle to avoid a 10,000 square-foot pornography emporium that wants to open up on their main thoroughfare. Sadly, this is déjà vu for the citizens of Peachtree Corners. We lost the battle to keep The Love Shack off of our main thoroughfare and have been subjected to the gnarly customers that frequent the place ever since. The pediatrician, who has his office directly next door in the medical office building, is giving up. Dr. Noel Preston is closing his practice tomorrow and that will be a loss to our community. He has fought X-rated litter in his parking lot from the git-go. Porno patrons park in front of his building because they don’t want their cars or marked panel trucks seen in front of The Love Shack, then because they are low-level human beings, they drop the packaging from their porn purchases in Dr. Preston’s parking lot for him to clean up or for his little patients to kick.

Judge Beverly Martin of Macon is the public-policy-maker sitting on the federal bench that ordered Gwinnett County to let the Love Shack open on our main drag. She said Gwinnett County did not have enough pornography emporiums for our population. Thanks to her, we have been subjected to nauseating red and purple neon on this building and the children, who are eating their chicken nuggets across the street at the Chick-fil-A, can look up and ask Mom and Dad what that place is.

Nearby food merchants might benefit from the proximity of the Love Shack up in Johns Creek, but other merchants will likely suffer. These porno emporiums are cankers on our family-friendly neighborhoods and should not be allowed to locate in prominent and upscale shopping venues. There are plenty of out-of-sight locations where the dirt kings can do their very profitable business. Their customers will find them. Studies have repeatedly shown that pornography is addictive to the needy personalities that use it. Their customers will find them.

Round these parts one could not help but notice that defeated candidate for Lt. Governor Ralph Reed had a political sign in front of many Waffle House restaurants right before Election Day. I checked with Waffle House and discovered that State Senator Don Balfour, who is a Waffle House vice president, gave the okay for these signs to be posted. No other candidate had a campaign sign posted on Waffle House property. The spokesperson at Waffle House said that Waffle House did not endorse Ralph Reed, but allowed the campaign signs.

Well, what do you think of that, my friends? I think I’m not going to go to Waffle House anytime soon until I get over Balfour’s bonehead decision, but I am a Cancerian so it may take a while. I also think Balfour’s power light under the Gold Dome might get a few outages if our Governor Sonny Perdue and Casey Cagle, who ran against Ralph Reed in the Republican Primary and won handily, are elected to the top jobs in November. I’m going to make a mental note to myself to keep track of what happens there. I guess everybody is entitled to one bonehead decision, but Balfour has already had his, as far as I am concerned. He was one of only two state senators who voted AGAINST the censure of Senator Ralph David Abernathy III in 1998 when RD3 was discovered smuggling marijuana in his underpants through security at Hartsfield.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Atlanta Bread Company at The Forum on Peachtree Parkway has a delightful wine tasting on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm. You get to taste four kinds of wine and four appetizers for only $10 per person. Owners of the restaurant, Ron and Marianne Murray, have a fabulous selection of great wines on their menu anyway, so come on over for this event and you’ll probably be over the moon with the wines they have chosen for the tasting!

Atlanta Bread Company at The Forum also has a Trivia Night on the third Friday in the month. You can bring in a team or join a team; it only costs $2 to play. Two rounds start at 7:30 pm. If you come to play Trivia and have dinner there first, which is a great idea, Ron Murray will give you a 10-percent discount on your meal. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Trivia winners. I also personally think they have the greatest tasting coffee, too!

The Murrays are very civic-minded folks. Among the many other things that they do, they very generously provide sensational sandwiches, cookies, and drinks for the poll workers who man our voting precincts in Peachtree Corners.

We in Gwinnett County are waiting for the other shoe to fall in the Bill McKinney nastiness against Commissioner Kevin Kenerly case and it’s turning out to be a pretty long wait! District Attorney Danny Porter may be waiting until Jodie Rosser receives her visit from the stork to announce his findings is my guess. We are all waiting to hear who all participated in this crummy undercover political campaign against Kenerly. I want to know who sent checks.

My District 2 representative on the Planning Commission, Rico Figliolini, saw to the printing of a couple of the dirty mailings for the stealth campaign. In his mind this may have been a legal business transaction for him, but ethically it sucked major mud. Commissioner Kenerly was a sitting commissioner, one who voted to appoint Figliolini to the Planning Commission. Figliolini ethically should have refused this business. Since he didn’t, I would like him to resign from the Planning Commission now. I do not want him representing me for anything at all! It is taking him a long time to resign, too, just further evidence that he “doesn’t get it.” Ethics is a hard subject for some people. Many flunk.

Hope all is well and thanks for reading.
