Local Shelter Assists Feline Victims of Hurricane Katrina
Extended hours this weekend for adoptions

ATLANTA (Sep. 20) – Good Mews Animal Foundation, a non-profit, cage-free, no-kill shelter located in Metro Atlanta, is assisting several groups in the ongoing rescue of displaced cats and kittens from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. This weekend, the shelter will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

“As the flood waters recede, volunteers are finding more and more stray pets along the Gulf Coast that need attention and caring homes. Good Mews is proud to help the victims of this tragedy. We hope that we can find loving homes for these furry survivors this weekend,” said Good Mews Shelter Manager Shannon Crafton of Marietta.

Currently, Good Mews has three adult cats and three kittens left homeless by this tragedy available for immediate adoption. Paula Rothman of Dunwoody, a Good Mews volunteer, brought the felines to Good Mews from an animal control shelter that was destroyed in Slidell, Louisiana. The cats are available for adoption because they were in the Slidell shelter the week before the hurricane, eliminating the time frame for previous owners to claim their pets.

Rothman is helping to rebuild an animal shelter in Slidell, Louisiana that was flooded by the storm. Both Good Mews and its volunteers donated hundreds of pounds of supplies for her to take to both the people and pets suffering in the aftermath of this tragedy. The probability of Good Mews receiving more cats from this area is highly likely. Like most animal shelters after Hurricane Katrina, Good Mews is way over usual capacity and needs to find loving homes for these furry evacuees as soon as possible to make room for more.
