Grand Larson-e

With granddaughters, life is just ducky!

Let me tell you about my grandducks! Well, let me back up a bit. I sometimes get ahead of myself when bragging about my family.

Remember how I spent the summer taking my granddaughters all around Gwinnett County? Well, now they’re showing me all the cool things they know about Gwinnett. A few weeks ago Kaylynne asked if I would go with her and Brittany to M. W. Holt School Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A. As we got into the car, Brittany suggested we stroll through downtown Lawrenceville before dinner.

“Grandma Donna (Mosley) takes us there a lot,” she said. “We know all the cool places.”

This cool place called Lawrenceville was a whole new experience for me. Five years ago when I worked as a merchandiser, Lawrenceville was just a strip of traffic lights and “turn only” lanes that slowed me down on my way to Winder. I’ve read in the Post about all the redevelopment there, but never made the effort to see what’s happening.

We started out at Scotland Yard, a mish-mash of merchandise that tempts the browser with a variety of antique, vintage and brand new items. The girls made mental notes of possible teacher gifts for Christmas and they each picked up a business card just like they’d seen me do all summer.

Next we stopped in at the Flying Saucer, a colorfully kooky café offering delectable desserts that look out of this world. We made a commitment to return there soon for an after school snack.

At the Paper Fairy and Pappy’s Peppers we gawked and giggled at all the novelties we saw. The owner of the Lil’ River Grill graciously gave us a tour of the unique architecture. Again, the girls collected business cards for me, just in case it might lead to a column.

As the stores began to close up shop at 6:00 PM, we headed out to Chick-Fil-A.

On the way home we made one last stop to Rhodes Jordan Park to visit those grandducks I so enthusiastically mentioned above.

Two years ago the Easter Bunny left six ducklings in a cage in the driveway of my stepdaughter’s home. They were SOO cute! But as the ducks grew bigger, it became apparent to the whole family that the birds were not happy. And even more apparent was how NOT happy the whole family was hosing the driveway everyday. So they took a step towards happiness and turned the ducks loose at Rhodes Jordan Park. And apparently, the ducks are very happy there because they never flew away.

If you happen to visit the lake at Rhodes Jordan Park and see six white ducks, more beautiful than all the others, I want to you to know that those are MY grandducks. (And if the park is too far away, then I’d be glad to show you their picture in my wallet.)
