It Might Be a Sign

When we speak of signs, the word can have so many different meanings and interpretations. Everything that we do is now based on instructions that we get from signs. They are used for directions, they are used for warnings, and they are used for information. The Five Man Electrical Band even wrote a song about signs in the seventies. I know that none of you are old enough to remember that one, but it was actually a big hit. The fact that I remember The Five Man Electrical Band is a pretty good sign that I am older than I care to admit. Signs are as much a part of our lives as anything we do.

While it is good that we have the various displays of signage to keep us in line, it is also important that we recognize those signs that may not be on colorful placards, but their message is just as important to our lives. Even though these signs are not posted on our roadways and thoroughfares, they are very visible in other ways. For example, when we find ourselves in a position where we have no clear idea of how many illegal immigrants are actually in our country that might be a sign that we must do something to secure our borders. The fact that politicians continue to ignore the problem is a sign that they are more concerned with perceived political correctness than they are with the security of our country. The fact that you can't turn on a television without seeing material that is risqué for adults, not to mention children, is a sign that something has happened to our country's moral compass. Even cartoons are no longer safe. Cartoons are now divided into adult and children's additions, but unfortunately children don't know the difference until it is too late. This is a pretty good sign that parents better know what their children are watching.

The fact that the number of murders committed in our country, that have domestic violence connections, continues to soar is a pretty good sign that this is a problem that must be dealt with. Parents are killing parents in front of their children and in some cases are even killing their children. We must formalize educational options for our children to let them know that there are avenues to escape these situations; before it is too late.

The fact that we have Americans, who go on International television and criticize our President on the war in Iraq, is a good sign that we have a short memory when it comes to empowering the enemy. Does anyone remember Vietnam? The fact that we would have people go out and buy a book by Jane Fonda is a clear sign that many people have no idea what her actions in Vietnam really were. Or more sadly, it is a sign that they do remember and they have chosen to ignore it.

The fact that our children's test scores continue to go down rather than up is a sign that it is time for a change back to the basics. If a student can not read and write, it is a pretty good sign that they can not do trigonometry and chemistry. Really, the signs are everywhere. All we have to do is open our eyes, our minds, and to commit ourselves to do something about them. If we don't, one thing is for sure. It will be a sign that our country is going down hill fast. If that occurs, all of the signs in the world will not save us. But even then, we will be looking for one last sign. It will be the one that says, "Line Starts Here for Last Flight Out."
