Fallen Heroes Deserve Better Fate
Three families, possibly four, will wake up today with the realization that part of their family is now gone. This is nothing new to mankind. We all know that just as we have life, we will have death. That is the way that it works. But, unexpected death sometimes makes this concept difficult to accept. And when this unexpected death comes at the hands of one who has no respect for life, not even their own; it is a very sad thing. After over a quarter century in the criminal justice field, I have seen first hand just how difficult this concept can be as fellow police officers have fallen to the sword of unconscionable violence. Every law enforcement and judicial officer realizes the dangers of the job from the first day that they accept a sworn oath to ensure justice. However, even as we accept the presence of danger, we also must never accept their deaths, when they occur, as simply collateral damage for the achievement of the ultimate goal of a free and safe society. Nothing that we may say, in the way of condolences, will make these families understand how such a thing can be allowed to happen. Certainly, nothing that I might say in this article will make their grief any less painful, or their anger any less manageable.
A Judge, Court Reporter and possibly two law enforcement officers now have heard their last case and made their last arrest. Let us remember the sacrifices that they made to ensure that our society was a civil society and a society that pays great respect for law and order. Without those articles of civilization firmly in place, the events of March 10, 2005 will become common place. Without those articles in place, not only will terror be a daily occurrence, it will become the prevailing wind of how we all shall go about our daily lives. We will fall victim to those who choose anarchy over a law abiding society.
It is time that the people of this country send a message loud and clear to those who have lost respect for themselves and decide to dole out their frustrations on innocent people. This message must echo from the lone police officer in the street, to every courthouse in this nation, and to the ears of every would be murderer, thug, terrorist, and spineless criminal that occupy a space on this earth. This message must be heard by those who fight harder every day for the right of the criminal and continue to ignore the rights of the victim. This message may now be a low moan but must be a crescendo of deafening shouts so that we may get the attention of those who choose to inject havoc in our lives.
These families have now joined the ranks of others who have felt their pain, their anger and their frustration. These families will now have lives that will forever be changed based on the actions of a man with no morals, a man with no respect, and a man who must certainly pay for his deeds. We are slipping down a slope that is dangerously steep. If we continue to slip without correction, we may find ourselves in a freefall that has a very predictable outcome.
Please let those who control the parachute get the message. It is now time to pull the cord! Pull it quickly and pull it firmly. The crash site is becoming clearer each day.
