But Baby….It’s Cold Outside
There has never been a truer statement than familiarity breeds content! We simply prefer to be in a place where we feel comfortable. We like being inside, near the old fireplace, just like we have always been. Never mind the fact that the heat from the fireplace goes straight up the chimney and does little to actually warm us. The fact remains that this is the way that it has been done for years so it must be right. Besides, we would never dream of leaving our place in front of the fire. After all, it’s cold outside. Why would we want to take a chance when the outside world seems so cold? We’ll just sit right here in front of this fire, even if it really isn’t the right fit for us anymore.
This analogy can be played out in so many things that we do, it’s tough to leave a comfort zone. Many Democrats are facing this dilemma as they watch our state head down a street called Republican Dominance. Now don’t get me wrong, there are many Democrats who have no intention of changing. Some of them will sit in front of the old fire until the last embers burn out. Not only do they not care that the room is getting a little chilly, they will tell you they prefer chilly. These are not the folks that we are talking about.
We’re talking about those Democrats who share the Republican’s zeal to re-establish a moral conscious in our government. We’re talking about Democrats who support the death penalty but are opposed to most, and in some cases, all options of abortion. We’re talking about those Democrats who think that there is nothing wrong with the Ten Commandments being displayed in our court houses or prayer being an option in our schools. We’re talking about those Democrats who think that we should spend less time teaching our children about alternative lifestyles and a little more time teaching them how to read. These are the Democrats who are starting to think that there might be a source of warmth that will better fit their needs than a couple of old logs whose flames just don’t seem to do the trick anymore. They like what they see with the Republican’s plan to warm us but it just is
so-o-o opposite of everything that they have been taught. They’ve been Democrats all their lives. Besides, it’s cold out there.. What a quandary.
Many of those concerns might be lessened if they take a short history lesson. I’m a prime example. My father has been a Democrat all his life. And so was his father, and so on, and so on. But over the years something happened. Those values, that my family evoked for generations, under the Democratic flag, suddenly were no longer valued at the Democratic Party table. In fact, most of those things that now have some Democrats confused were once championed by their party. Now, they seem to run from them.
The Democrats have strayed so far to the left that they have left the base of their party behind. They may still be by the fire but they feel anything but warm. In fact, if you want to experience frostbite, let someone from the Democratic leadership hear a fellow Democrat endorsing any one of the issues that historically they embraced. They might even shout that “you are starting to sound like a Republican.” Hmmm, maybe you are. Or, maybe you are like many others, just like you, who didn’t just wake up one day and decide that they were Republican. But, they woke up one day and knew for sure, that they could no longer be a Democrat. Maybe it isn’t a problem with the Democratic logs but more so a problem with who is poking the fire. Maybe some Democrats have forgotten that fire is fueled best by fresh air, not more hot air.
The old fire still flickers for many, who despite it’s ineffectiveness, will just put on another jacket. But, for some Democrat’s perhaps the time has come to step into the elements of change…But baby, it’s cold outside. Maybe….but it ain’t too doggone hot in some Democratic houses anymore either.
