On A Recent Trip to the Supermarket…..

Have you ever been so enticed by a headline in one of those tabloid newspapers that you just could not resist any longer? You know, maybe it was a story about a politician who had been exposed as an alien. No, that won’t work, it is actually believable. Maybe it was a story of an untalented entertainer who went on to be the leading money maker in the industry? Oops, sorry, I forgot about Ashley Simpson. Okay, anyway, you get the picture. But, I actually saw one of these tabloid headlines, or at least I thought it was, in a recent article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The headline read, “High Court Won’t Hear Appeal on Felons’ Voting Rights.” If there ever was a tabloid headline, this had to be it. So I did what you do anytime you see such a ridiculous story, but you just can’t resist reading it. You hide it in another publication to mask your inane temptation. I hid it in a Cosmopolitan magazine. I know, but come on, felons fighting to vote? Cosmopolitan must by far have the superior articles.

It seems that a group of convicted felons were fighting for their right to vote. That in itself was a tabloid story. Oh, did I mention that they were still incarcerated…you know….prison. They had actually filed a law suit in Washington and Florida (there’s a big surprise) that their rights were being violated because they were not being allowed the right to vote. They claim that the states were in violation of the Voter Rights Acts by denying them access to the polls. Huh? Did I mention that they were in prison, for committing felonies and then being convicted of felonies? To add insult to injury, they claim that the fact that they cannot vote is particularly upsetting to minorities because they are overrepresented in the prison community. Huh? I think that it is time for a reality check. How is it that these guys got into prison? They apparently committed a felony. They apparently were convicted and they were apparently sentenced to prison. Hence, you lose the right to vote. Hey, here’s another news flash guys you also lose the right to possess a firearm. What an unfair system we have in this country. Of course, convicted felons should have the right to possess a firearm. Anything less would deny them their equal access to the gun store.

I believe that they are being denied access to the polls because they are in prison. Am I alone on this one or have these guys lost their minds? The last time I checked, convicted felons did not have the right to vote unless they went through the legal process to regain their voting privileges. And guys, this can only come after you satisfied your sentence, parole, probation and all the trappings that go with being a convicted felon. And guys listen real close to this part, YOUR IN PRISON!!!

Even more alarming is the fact that the courts are even wasting their and our time with this issue. Last year the 9th Circuit, after hearing the law suit, decided that the case did not have merit. But, they did feel that the inmate’s suit deserved a full airing in court. The only thing that deserves an airing is the foul smell that all this bull has created. And still, we wonder why some people have lost faith in our judicial system. The courts should carefully fold these lawsuits into neat little paper airplanes and fly them right back to prison with a banner trailing in the breeze that says, “On behalf of the law abiding citizens of the United States, bite me.” That would be a wonderful way to restore credibility.

Oh well, why should we be shocked at stories such as this? Perhaps it is the time in which we live. Stories such as this have made me rethink the whole “Elvis Is Alive” headlines that will not go away. Maybe he is alive. Maybe he is sitting on a BENCH somewhere in the 9th Circuit. You gotta love it!
