All Eyes Are On Us

Since we were kids, we have been taught that the United States of America is the greatest country in the world. Our parents taught this to us, just as their parents had taught them and so on and so on. And for those of us who are now parents, we continue to instill this thought process into our children. This has always been an easy sell because the facts tend to back up this statement. While some people, for the first time in my life time, are raising suspicion as to the validity of this statement, I for one happen to believe that it is still true. If we are not the greatest, most powerful nation in the world, then who is? There is one segment of our American Society that is beginning to show some wear. The segment that is getting a bit wobbly is the thing that makes us the greatest country in the world; our democratic process.

Voting and the ability to choose our nation's leaders has always been a process that many parts of the world were enviable of and other parts of the world despised. This much of our process still holds true. People of the world who live in dictatorships or in areas where their political process is little more than a puppet show, look to us as the model of free democracy. The other areas that despise freedom of any kind, including capitalism and the democracy that we stand for, are just as adamant that it should be stamped out. Over the past couple of years, we have seen the extremes that these haters will go to destroy what we stand for. But, through the smoke and dust of the World Trade Center, our democracy survives. Despite, the desperate measures that have been perpetrated in Iraq, which have sent many of our brave soldiers home in body bags, our democracy survives. The flag of this country is an indisputable beacon of hope, where ever it may fly, that a free and democratic process is possible. Whether it unfurls its colors in the mountains of Afghanistan or the desserts of Iraq or in the deepest waters of the Persian Gulf, hope lives. Whether it flies from the courthouse of rural Georgia or from the tallest skyscrapers of New York, hope lives.

All eyes are on us at a crucial point in our history. The world watches as CNN portrays us as the most divided nation that we have ever been. It is now up to us to prove that even a nation split down the middle, as to our political ideology can come together based on the results of the democratic process. We have always done it before and we must do it now. Especially, now! We must cast aside our differences and accept the election results as we have for over 200 years. The hashing out of our election results with one lawsuit after another that is based on partisan politics rather than democratic values is destructive. Whether we are Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, or Independent on November 3rd we are all members of the same party, the American Party. And it is imperative that this cohesiveness be apparent to the world, as they will be watching.

If we are truly the greatest country in the world, we will persevere. Democracy and all that it stands for will eliminate any problem that comes our way. However, if we allow ourselves to get in the way of democracy, based on going to any extreme to see a particular party victorious, we will become the world's greatest indignation rather than simply the world's greatest nation.

All eyes are on us. It is up to us to decide what we will look like.
